My youngest child was waking up at 5am for breakfast, so my wife and I alternated the early mornings to feed her. Instead of hitting the snooze on my off days, I would pedal out the trails and get lost for a while before I had to land back at my desk for work at 9am.

The trails were close enough to ride to, but they required at least 1000ft of climbing just to get to the trailhead. Some were even higher up in the hills. Took me a couple months to get to the top without getting off the bike to take a break. I also became accustomed to hiking the bike through rough patches or steep unridable trails like this stuff.

This turned out to be a great outlet. I completely avoided the depression and accompanying +10 pounds of weight gain that covid seemed to inflict on everyone. In fact, I was in great shape.
